Jonathan O’Dea: Expressions 2021

October 2021

Here’s a sneak preview of a pop-up exhibition running October 15-24.

Jonathan O’Dea works in pastel, skillfully wielding them to produce a ‘painterly’ effect. His subject matter is often sweet treats – like candy apples or soft drinks – interesting choices for a dentist, which O’Dea is (as is visual artist Ilse Hughes).

Expressions 2021 opens tomorrow, 5pm, at the South Beach Building, 219 Duckworth Street, in St John’s. For more of O’Dea’s work visit jonathanodeaart.com

The Southside Hills in History and Song

BY Matthew Hollett

I’M NOT SURE who first referred to them as the “Dear Old” Southside Hills, or if anyone still calls them that. Possibly the name went out of fashion when the huge oil tanks were built. But the nickname seems to have stuck for a while in the early 1900s, a curious term of affection for the imposing hillside that gives shape to St. John’s Harbour.
