Founded in 2001 by Roger Maunder and named in honoured of the Nickel Theatre, the first cinema in St John’s to screen feature film ‘talkies’. The 600-seat theatre was where The Viking debuted. “We had a bunch of first time filmmakers, but there was no place to screen our films,” Maunder explained in a 2003 interview.
The Nickel Festival was originally conceived as a weekend event, but now runs a week and screens 50 films, local, Canadian, and international – mirroring the growth of the province’s film sector, which is now a 1-billion dollar industry.
