Mark it! Nickel Film Festival celebrates 25 years

Founded in 2001 by Roger Maunder and named in honoured of the Nickel Theatre, the first cinema in St John’s to screen feature film ‘talkies’. The 600-seat theatre was where The Viking debuted. “We had a bunch of first time filmmakers, but there was no place to screen our films,” Maunder explained in a 2003 interview.
The Nickel Festival was originally conceived as a weekend event, but now runs a week and screens 50 films, local, Canadian, and international – mirroring the growth of the province’s film sector, which is now a 1-billion dollar industry.
