Nelson White: Tukien (Awaken)

January 2023

Born and raised in the community of Epwikek, Ktaqmkuk (Flat Bay, NL), Nelson White is a member of the Flat Bat First Nation Band. He studied visual arts at the Bay St George Community College before graduating from NSCAD.

“I’ve often been told that my work, especially in art school, wasn’t ‘Native enough.’ But there’s no one definition of Indigenous. The Indigenous people I know are these cool, interesting, vibrant people that I want to introduce you to. That’s who I paint.”

Yanksgiving in Newfoundland

BY Emily Deming

“No one insists on the crudité platter every year because they love raw vegetables. We are insisting on our place at the table; on being recognized for what we believe we are within our family, within our group of friends, within our community.”
