Call for Submissions: Writing and Visual Art

BY NQ

December 2018

NQ and NQonline.ca are seeking creative non-fiction, personal essays, articles, fiction, poetry, and visual art and illustration. We are looking for work related to our Spring issue theme, “arrival”, and also on general topics related to NL life, culture, and arts.

“Arrival” should be broadly interpreted and could touch on the following themes, or others:

  • Travel
  • Coming home
  • Exploration
  • Realization or completion
  • Life changing moments or experiences
  • New beginnings, literal or figurative
  • Chance meetings
  • Making an entrance
  • Coming into oneself
  • Getting somewhere

We encourage you to approach these themes with as much creativity as possible. Writers and artists may consider the themes as a starting place, but should extend their thinking as far and broad as they like. We will also accept submissions unrelated to the theme of “arrival” as long as they are related to NL life, culture and arts.

Submissions should be lively, and should interpret the culture and the history of this place and people in new, unexpected, ways.

We are looking for submissions from both established authors and artists and new voices. Work must be previously unpublished. In general, it’s easier for us to place submissions between 700-1200 words. Longer works will be considered, but we publish fewer long articles.

For more information about our pay rates and specifications, please see www.nqonline.ca/about.

Interested? Please send your submission or pitch to jsulliva@mun.ca. Submissions will be accepted until February 1st, 2019. Earlier submissions may be considered for use prior to the closing date of the call.
